Looking forward to triple 10 wedding day

Wedding is a once in a life time event, everything you do will become precious memory accompany you and your partner for the rest of your life. Therefore, I really admire couple who dedicate time and efforts in order to make their wedding special and memorable. I’m very sure Ho Siong & Rebecca are one of them.

They gave me the above magnetic strip when I accompanied them to recce for the church lighting condition last month. Now, this strip is happily sticking on my fridge door.

Alright! Date reserved, I’m ready to eternalize your perfect moment on your wedding day.

Jonathan + Fiona Wedding

I’m sorry for not updating this blog for quite a long time as I’m really busy recently with all kind of different works.

Jonathan and Fiona wedding was a heart warming wedding that is full of love, kinship and friendship. It’s one of the special wedding that I have covered.

The choir really did a great job during their Holy Matrimony in church and I do really impressed by the march in song Sarah-Brightman-alike “Ave Maria”. Besides, their wedding banquet live band also did a splendid job. I like them so much and decided to dedicate one photo for the trio in this blog post.

hoho.. hello guys! here is the site that i document my photography journey!

alright, let's get start, i'm just a person who love to shoot photos, begin with shooting wildly in whatever way that i like.. and then i start to realize that it is not just photos, it's a form of art, an expression, a moment that, we, human being trying to preserve.

so i start to learn.. and still learning.... how to master this form of art..

guess.. what? actually i have started shooting from my primary school.. haha.. just that.. it's plainly point and shoot.. haha..

::well.. this is the first ever camera that i had touched in my life.. an olympus! it's actually my family's first ever camera as well, my dad bought it for traveling purpose::

::and then it come to my brother's Minolta SLR, exact model i can't remember already, bought by my mum to my brother as a gift for him to document his uni life in New Zealand, i also got chances to play around with it as point and shoot in fully auto mode (haha.. what a waste!)::

::following by a digital age, this Canon A70 is my first digital camera from an establish camera brand, to my shame i had previously cheated by a taiwanese company and bought a super lousy digital camera out of no way, i can't even remember their brand name now.... by the way, this A70 is still operating now, it been given to my bro-in-law to take family photos::

::Thanks to the some release of manual function in A70, i had learned a lot beside just point and shoot, wanted to upgrade to DSLR but it's really too expensive, so i bought this S3is instead, despite its feature full functions, the picture noises and limitation of a single lens has bugged me often::

::finally, thanks to the harsh competition around the low cost digital SLR market, i'm able to get a pretty decent DSLR(canon 450D) for a good price, and really start to explore the true essence of photography.. ::

White Balance Experiment

Recently I got some feedback about the correction of white balance. As i always use AWB(auto white balance) as default so this create some problem when shooting in mixed lighting situation especially indoor with different types of artificial lighting.

As a normal person like me, i guess you'll simply assume the camera will recognize all color exactly you seen from your eye but in actual fact it doesn't, the camera need some reference point so that it can calculate and compensate for the color "it" seen. This is why white balance come in to play. If you set the white balance correctly then the image color you got is very much the same as the actual situation, else, you'll probably got a yellowish face in a party with halogen lighting.

alright let cut the crap and see some example :

::Pic 1, taken with Custom White Balance from this youtube video::

::Pic 2, taken with Auto White Balance::

::Pic 3, same image as Pic 2 with white balance corrected by DPP-Digital Photo Professional from Canon, this can be corrected easily as the cushion is very close to white color even under mixed lighting::

for another cases in which we can't find any white in picture, the white balance can't be corrected easily like the same case above.

::Pic 6, same image as Pic 5 with white balance correct by using same technique as Pic 3 in DPP::

::Pic 7, same image as Pic 5 with white balance trying to correct in photoshop using same among of time spent in corecting Pic 6 (i'm sorry i'm still learning photoshop..), by using more time and effort , you can make the picture looks exactly the same as Pic 4 however, it isn't very practical to do this if you're shooting for event, you'll probably find yourself spending more time in photoshop instead of spending more time in thinking creative shooting which you suppose to do::

Jun Yong + Pei Shan Wedding

Last Sunday, it's my buddy Jun Yong's wedding. I'm so happy for him and can't wait to help him out. Besides, I also got opportunities to learn from Bobby, he is a professional wedding photographer with WPJA affiliation, in a more layman term "very solid and powerful". It's so great to shoot with him and I can feel his seriousness and right attitude towards his work, thumb up and 5 stars rating for him! hoho.. so if you're looking for an excellent wedding photographer, please don't hesitate to have a talk with him.

Teck Shyan + Sin Yee Wedding

Well...it's very hard to begin writing this blog entry because there are too many memories that come into my mind that I'm afraid my limited command of English language cannot completely describe how I felt for this wedding shooting.

This guy is one of my best buddies, we met during primary school time and he is always the source of laughter in our class because he was very easily got shy and his head will turn red in no time, this is how he get the nickname of "red apple" in class. ahem, to be his buddies, we'll laugh out really loud as well. (what a great buddy huh?)

And now, he is getting married! Times really fly...
I still remembers lots of things in mind and they seems like just happen yesterday :
the first time that we fried our french fry in your really near to school home;
the time we queueing up in basketball court waiting to go back home;
the time we went for basket ball training;
the time we wondering around in school bus to FYHS;
the time we went back our lovely primary school to be relief teacher;
the time you driving your "lao bok cart"(lousy car) and give all of us a joy ride;
the time we encouraging you to go for it...and now she is your wife;
the time that our dear friend leave us forever and leaves us in pain;
and not forgetting numerous "limteh"(tea drinking) session that everyone chill out and talking nonsense together.

There are still much more but I simply can't continue to write, because all the childhood memories blow out together and I'm afraid it can't just described by few paragraphs.....so I guess I'll round up here...I hope that I did not disappoints you in helping you to document your wedding by way of photos.

Chi Yung + Shen Reen Wedding

Aha! I got another wedding assignment! Maybe you have notice or maybe not, those that I had helped taking photos for them in their actual wedding day, all of them are my very good friends. Frankly speaking, I'm so happy that I can contribute a part in their weddings, which I think it's a very important time in their life.

For the 3 recent assignments, they even did not hire professional wedding photographer and entrust me with the task of "Eternalize their Perfect Moment". (hahaha..luckily you guys know me! Else you better have budget for hiring a good one!)

To me, my task at the wedding is not just taking photos, I got my own mission statement: To document the wedding by ways of photos in an undisturbed way. The kind of feeling that no photographer is actually there but the photographer is actually working diligently there to capture those being missed out by most of the participant. Therefore, there is a reason for me to be there, to eternalize that split second moment that will never replay again.

Above is what suddenly come to my mind when I writing this post for Chi Yung & Sheen Reen wedding.

Well..It's actually very hard to describe the groom.He is my senior in my postgraduate studies...taught me a lot of things and I'm still learning from him for many things till now..

To me.. this guy is really a complicated one..
He can be very serious or crazy.
He can be very friendly or pissing you off.
He can be discussing works with you or talking "hamsap"(cheeky) joke to you.

However, despite all this complication he still manage to find a very good wife! hahaha.. just joking anyway :P

The last time we met before his wedding was his commencement. This time we met was his wedding... so I guess next time we meet is either my commencement or my wedding or you baby boy's full month party??? hahaha.... let's see which one come first ya.

Sean + Jacelyn Wedding

It's been a long time since I shot ROM photos for Sean & Jacelyn. In between this period, I had brushed up my skill a little bit and ready to go a little bit further! hahaha.. The best part: I'm not the main photographer, again, yeah! (you might wonder why I'm so happy? continue read on)

...well...this also means that :
1. I can by pass the group photo sessions and focus on the moment!
2. Got time to sit back, relax and eat~
3. Can "eat snake"(rest), and let the main one do the job. haha!
(rest assure that all this doesn't affect my photos qualities, hoho...)

Lean Seong + Jocelyn Wedding

It was a beautiful weekend that I don't have to wake up early for this wedding assignment so I can post-processing photos taken from previously hold Sean & Jacelyn Wedding till late night while preparing my mind for Lean Seang & Jocelyn Wedding the next day.

Initially thought this would be a small scale assignment but after arriving the venue, my mind changed totally. That place was simply amazing with nice and lovely decoration; fully immersing guests in a romantic atmosphere. (Gosh, this kind of venue & decoration is what I had been looking forward to shoot for)

For guests arriving late, you might find those tables and chairs along the walk way weren't really being arranged nicely.(Initially, it were arranged nicely when I arrived earlier) You might wonder why is it so messy, huh? This is because all those tables were being shift up to the in-door ball room at second floor as an emergency plan for countering raining. However, this couple is really blessed that even those dark clouds weren't bear to actually rain but only "pass-by" and made the weather so nice that you don't feel hot at all sitting out-door around noon. Therefore, those poor workers have to shift them back while guests arriving.

Oppss...seem that I had been talking too much about the weather..hahaha.... For this assignment, there were so many spontaneous expressions being captured that made this wedding shoot a particular memorable one to me. Thanks to the wonderful couple and guests(ahem,because I'm also one of them..haha!) Remember to check out the album from link at the end of this post.

Zhi Qiang + Xiao Jing Wedding and WPJA membership!

I'm now a WPJA member! yeay! It's the day before the wedding of Zhi Qiang + Xiao Jing that I had been granted the membership! But I only knew that 2 days later as I'm so busy gearing up and think of ways to improve in the actual day wedding shoot for this lovely couple. For more info about WPJA, follow the link below:

Another good friend of mine got married! This fellow I knew him since Junior Middle 2(or 1??I can't remember...) in secondary school, even though we were not in the same class but we always study on the same table in the study room waiting for our afternoon class to start, this is how we get to know each other. (erm.. this is what I remember.. got any other version?)

Well, that is not the end of course, we had been same class for all 3 years during our Senior Middle class! What a great record! And during this 3 years, he had been a very reliable source for Maths and Physics solutions!

If I'm not wrong I guess I'm the first few friends to visit your home? Well, frankly speaking, that is a really tough time for me as I'm lacking behind a lot in Physics and need him to help tutoring me, that's why I went to his home for emergency Physics makeup! Luckily got you otherwise my Physics result might be even worse.

Later, he went to NUS and I went to NTU, but distance is not a problem! haha...good friend seldom meet but once meet, that kind of feeling will still be the same anyway! At least, I still feel you're the same honest and sincere man that I first knew in study room. :D

ahem.. I guess I'm getting old and keep nagging about memories huh? (haha.. okok..let's make it short and sweet.) In short, I had helped him cover actual day wedding photos together with Jun Hong.

Ding Liang + Zhou Jian = The 090909 Wedding by Jen Wong Photography!

About 2 months ago, I helped Ding Liang cover his doctorate degree commencement and now he is getting married! Time fly and it seem like we're still at the commencement party yesterday.

In spite of very short notice, I still accepted this assignment without hesitation despite crashing head to head with my hectic writing schedule. This is simply because he is Ding Liang, my senior sitting right behind me during our memorable Measurement Lab day. He is the one with very good attitude towards study and will really spend overnight at lab just to finish writing one paper and I pay my respect to him. He is really the #2 crazy senior I had knew after Chi Yung.

I'm really happy for him for landed a good career and get married! This is another milestone of their life and I want to wish them happily ever after and holding each other hand until the end of time.

Siong Loong + Siew Leng Wedding (Crowne Plaza @ Changi)

I knew Siong Loong and Siew Leng even before they become a couple..haha.. A really nice guy and a decisive woman. Although Siew Leng and I was in a same OG group in orientation but I was really come to know more about her when I was assigned in helping her organizing a one week event call Chinese Cultural Festival in NTU.

I always feel very honor to be part of the wedding. Frankly speaking, my writing wasn't really good so I use my action to send my greatest blessing to them, helping them preserving those good moments in their wedding by form of photos. Cheers! Friendship Forever!

Steven & Ivy Wedding Dinner

Steven contacted me in a relatively short time frame before his wedding but I still offer to help him since I was also free on that day. Since he only needed my help for wedding dinner therefore it’s also quite a simple assignment and I really quite enjoy it.

By the way, there are really a great number of children attending their wedding dinner and I never had such amount of children shoots in a wedding dinner like this. Normally, children expression is very raw and natural, the best part is that they didn’t know and didn’t care about my existence so I can really capture what they were doing, quietly.

What surprise me most is that I met Ivy’s brother few weeks after her wedding day during my lunch time. It’s really a small world.

It’s also quite hard to get old people natural look, as they’re very sensitive to camera and tend to be unnatural, but after looking at the wrinkle at the forehead, I just can’t resist in taking this shoot. The best part, he didn’t sense my existence yet.

Haha! Children party time!

I always looking for moment like this in wedding….the very real interaction of couple.

Even at a joyful occasion, there is a quiet moment. I’m grateful that I was there.

Ray & Ivy Registration of Marriage @ Meritus Mandarin

Once upon a time, there were 4 silly guys planning to go Ubin for a one day outing in celebrating of Jen’s birthday.. haha… so… this was how we got the photos below @_@ I guess Titanic was really hot during that time, huh? Digital camera was still selling at hefty price tag during that time and none of us remember to bring any film camera (okie, this was a guy outing!).. so.. we spent 20 bucks and get a disposable film camera, not a bad decision though …haha… (got some really meaningful photos!! )

Last wedding shoot in 2009 from Jen Wong Photography - Welik & Pui Ling Wedding

It has been a great year in 2009 and I really learn a lot about photography. I knew that it’s never going to end as there are always something new to learn about everyday. I got my WPJA membership this year too and I’m really looking forward to a great year ahead in 2010. Sharing with you something I saw on the internet these few days. In term of creativity, never lock yourself down with some sort of template or buying other people preset or action in Photoshop because “Photographer are hunter, keep hunting!” That will help to unleash you own potential, own style.

The background is a bit messy so I focus on the red “double happiness” and waiting for the bride to come out after changing.
(I have been waiting for you…haha.. )

I was thinking of shooting the red little “double happiness” sticker on the door and the bride suddenly came into the frame.
(This one was not planned and it’s totally plain luck plus some instinct in pulling the shutter.)

Liu Zhen + Luo Ying signing the paper @ Top of Singapore

As there are special requests from the couple not to release any picture of them and guests to public for privacy reason therefore we can only enjoy the nice scenery from their solemnisation venue.

Wee Charm + Pek Pek Wedding Dinner at Pekin Sutera Utama

Everything went on smoothly at this wedding dinner except all the confetti & streamer handheld cannon poppers were not working. Well, that doesn’t stop the 1st march in (of course!) and those brilliant gentlemen who held them do have their own way to solve this urgent problem and preserved this critical moment. At least, graphically the out come are pretty pleasing.

Taking lesser lift and use staircase more often. If your office or home located at level 16, you can take the lift to level 12 and use the staircase to reach your destination.
Eat lesser meat or convert to vegetarian
If the above are too hard to do for you… then simply bring your own bag when go shopping
Taking public transport

Louis Pang Studio – Odyssey of Love

As I’m getting married soon on Oct next year… and because of me and my fiancée love the portrait Louis did so much or maybe because we came from the same country as him. We actually seriously consider to engage him for his services and photos despite his premium price tag. My fiancée asked for Louis quotation and to our very surprise the answer is “Louis Pang Studio – Odyssey of Love”. We’re very much delighted by this DVD presentation. Whether we’ll be engaging his service or not, I highly recommended him.

Sean + Jacelyn Registration of Marriage

To me, Sean + Jacelyn Registration of Marriage(ROM) is a very special assignment.

There are many "first" in this ROM shooting :
This is my first shooting event that I received a red packet for helping to shoot photos.
This is my first time to try 11am-12pm under the sun shooting, it's really hot but it's fun.
This is my first shooting event that I had destroyed quite a number of spider's webs for the sake of getting a good angle.
This is my first shooting event that I feel a wide angle lens is needed.

last but not least, that day is 20081122, it was really a special day! let's enjoy some of my favorite photos taken that day.
